5 Haircare Must Haves for Curly Girls
Curly hair can be hard to manage, but I’ve finally mastered the formula for a frizz-free mane. Check out these five hair products that I swear by!
Oh, the ode to curly hair.
We love it; we hate it. We don’t quite understand how to tame it.
I remember countless mornings getting ready for high school, cursing my reflection in the mirror for not having bone-straight hair like the popular girls in my class. Fortunately, I’ve grown to love my messy waves.
Recently, I noticed my hair was looking stringy, frizzy, and duller than normal. I scoured the web and concluded that I needed to introduce protein into my haircare routine. Well, it turns out there is such a thing as using too much protein, and it can actually make the problem worse. That’s pretty much what happened to me.
It wasn’t until I took a (much neglected) trip to my stylist/hair doctor that she was able to chop off some of the dead, stringy ends and make some suggestions on how to manage my curls properly. After countless hours of trial and error, I finally feel confident that I’ve conquered my curls and found some really incredible products along the way.
Now I’m here to share them with you!
Aveda Dry Remedy Shampoo + Conditioner
I don’t know what it is exactly about this shampoo and conditioner line…but it is a serious game changer for my hair. My stylist noticed my hair was looking way more brittle than it normally does. She used these products on me, and the first thing I noticed was how deliciously aromatic it is. The product website describes the smell as having trace scents of organic bergamot, lavender, and ginger lily. It smells like a really ritzy spa, you know, the kind that uses expensive essential oils. It also completely transformed my hair's texture, using buriti oil to bring my lifeless curls back to life and make it significantly softer.
ArtNaturals Luxe Argan Oil Hair Mask
I was never much one to use a hair mask until I had my recent hair emergency. Aside from the Aveda shampoo and conditioner, my stylist recommended I incorporate a hydrating argan oil mask into my shower routine. ArtNaturals Luxe's mask came highly recommended by a sweet Ulta employee who had even curlier locks herself. After using it a few times, I can honestly say I will repurchase this again and again. It keeps my hair the same level of silky smoothness that I left the salon with, for a fraction of the salon price.
Ouidad Curl Shaper Bounce Back Reactivating Mist
Before my stylist told me about this product, I had 1) never heard of the brand Ouidad and 2) never imagined a product like this existed. My hair is notorious for looking amazing on the first day but falling flat and lifeless after sleeping on it. After mentioning that I had considered buying a silk scarf to wrap my hair and sleep in, my stylist saved the day with this killer recommendation. The product “combines the benefits of a curl refresher and a leave-in conditioner to energize and refresh loose curls and waves to bring them back to life.” I’ve never heard of anything like this, but I can honestly say it exceeded my expectations. Just make sure to spray it a good distance away from your head as it is quite saturating.
Pravana The Perfect Blonde Masque
Obviously, this product is only applicable to the blondes reading this, but if that’s you, then I’m telling you right now: stop what you’re doing and buy this mask immediately. This is my holy grail toning product. Quite literally, THE purple shampoo of purple shampoos. If you want to keep your hair icy, ashy platinum while also keeping it soft & healthy, then this is the product you’ve been looking for. Before, I used Redken’s purple shampoo with great toning results but found it drying on my curls. This mask neutralizes brassiness while hydrating and treating your hair. It truly is the cream of the crop for me.
